M3U8 frequently asked questions
QWhat is M3U8, and how is it related to HLS?▸
M3U8 is the playlist format used by HLS (HTTP Live Streaming, a protocol introduced by Apple). It is plain UTF-8 text listing the addresses and durations of the video segments — not the video itself. The player reads the list, fetches the segments in order and plays them as they arrive, which is also what makes live streaming and instant quality switching possible.
QWhy can't I just open a .m3u8 file directly in my browser?▸
Safari supports HLS natively, so it plays directly. Chrome, Edge and Firefox do not, and need a compatibility layer to feed HLS to the browser. This player already handles that: paste a URL and it plays, with no extension required.
QHow do I get an m3u8 URL?▸
On the page playing the video, press F12 to open developer tools, switch to the Network panel, type "m3u8" in the filter box and reload the page. Then right-click the request that returns the m3u8 playlist and copy its full URL.
QI pasted a URL but the screen stays black. How do I troubleshoot?▸
Several causes are common: (1) the URL is signed and has expired — grab a fresh one from the page you got it; (2) the origin enforces Referer or User-Agent checks — such a URL usually fails in other players too; (3) the origin does not allow cross-origin requests, so the browser blocks them; (4) the stream is DRM-protected (Widevine / FairPlay) and needs a licensed player. Opening the same URL in VLC is a quick way to tell whether the address itself or the browser is the obstacle.
QDoes it support live streams? What about RTMP?▸
HLS live streams are supported: the playlist is refreshed continuously and the player follows the newest segments. RTMP and HTTP-FLV belong to a different protocol family and are not supported here.
QWhat is the difference between M3U8 and MP4?▸
MP4 is a complete video file: it is usually fetched as one piece, which makes it convenient to store and share. M3U8 is only a playlist — the video is split into many small segments that the player fetches on demand. That is why playback can start before the whole file arrives, quality can change mid-stream, and live content works well. Use MP4 for archiving, M3U8 for playing quickly in a browser.
